Yarn and Fabrics
YARN & WOOL:
- Generally any type of yarn can be used to experiment. Most carpets are made with natural wool yarn or a synthetic blend. Thread two to four strands of yarn and always test run before tufting.
- Yarn Types:
- Vegetable yarns: such as organic cotton, linen, raffia and paper
- Animal yarns: such as wool, mohair, silk and horsehair
- Semi-synthetic: yarns such as viscose
- Synthetic yarns: such as polyester, acrylic, Lurex and nylon
- Mineral yarns: such as metallic and conductive
PRIMARY BACKING FABRICS:
- Generally referred to as Carpet Backing Fabric, or Monk's Cloth. Primary backing fabric is your tufting canvas, anything with a even weave structure is also good to go. These backing fabrics are mostly made with cotton, jute, polyester, or a blend of cotton and polyester.
SECONDARY BACKING FABRIC:
- Secondary backing fabrics can be cotton or synthetic mesh, jute burlap, or latch hook canvas. This layer of fabric is generally used as a backing material with binding adhesive like Latex glue or PVC.
